I just upgraded to a 40br for my 3 1/2" rhaph and even the 20 gallon tank with him and a baby whale looks empty. The 40 will be a display style tank in my living room so I want it to look nice and have some life to it. Right now my same sized baby whale is doing great and the vampire tetra does not bother it at all. He seems to be well tempered.

Anyways what kind of fish do you think I could add? I would love some prehistoric looking fish, but I don't know if that is realistic or not. The vampire tetra will either end up in a custom tank if he grows as expected, if he grows too fast he will end up in maybe a 75 before a custom or he may die in the 40 before he gets large. I have read that these guys do not live long. In the case that he does I plan on an electric catfish. So any fish that could handle an electric catfish possibly would be ideal, but not necessary as I could pass on it.

Give me some ideas.

PS, I am going to use a powerful powerhead to create enough current, maybe an aquaclear 70 or something.

You could put just about any fish that you like as long as it does not stress out your Raph with any agression or competes with it for food.Raphs can be skittish and may not eat if they are intmidated.

i have 3-6" scombs which are similar to raphs. they dont bother anything but the 2" minnows i use for feeding. i have them in a community tank right now. im going to separate them down the road.

So the rhaph won't bother any fish that are his size?
They usually ignore anything that they cannot eat.
