IN MY TANK
Hi,

I have read from very disturbing things about mixing gar with aggressive fish. I was planing to put my gar with a few ciclhid and arrowana, but now i dont no what to do. I have about 20 small poly's,1 small florida,1pearl eartheater,1small sun catfish,2cigars.

My prize fish are my poly's and gar. As gars are very hard to come by in South Africa, therefore i rather have my gar happy.

Do you guys think i should stick with the fish i currently have? Can i add a silver arrowana to the mix. Should i keep the eartheater as they are not to agressive to other fish? Should i add more eartheater? Will this be too risky?

Thank you

im not gonna even bother. ill post, then a bunch of people will pop up behind me and contradict me. Ill give u the basics, not gonna bother explaining, just give the run down.

No aro's(besides african)
No catfish
No cichlia
No shiny fish
No aggressive fish

Best gar tank mates are other gar. there are other exceptable species though.

:iagree: I've tried my silver arrow and gar a few times now.. and it just doesn't work. I keep 3 fire eels, and a royal pleco with my florida and they all get along great. And anything 1/2 your gars size is potential food. The sun cat IMO should be a fine tank-mate for the florida gar.. getting 8"+ but staying fairly small You shouldn't have an issue with it, as long as it doesn't show aggression. As the gar gets bigger it may attempt to eat it, there in lies the issue w/ cats and gar mixing I surmise?.. either they get to big.. or small. and the spines on cats can easily do damage internally if swallowed.

I will agree with Lep for the most part.

African Arowana's and polypterus seem to be the best tankmates, especially when keeping with the ancients theme.

Although I have much success with Datnoids as well.

i try gar with silver but my silver kill but when i bought another gar and put it with my other gar and poly they work find but some how i bought another gar and but it with my silver they got along gar never mess or compete for food with my aro dont understand my silver aro

i also have virtually no idea what this post means.

to the OP - you can search through the forum for many threads about this, so i would encourage that.

regarding this specific thread, aside from the other tankmates that have been mentioned, the south american lungfish and Australian lungfish make good gar tankmates provided they are of similar size. AUL is the more docile of the lungfishes, but most of the time a SAL will work too (i currently keep both with a variety of gar species) --

I have had success with an indo datnoid (currently ~7") with my Florida gars, as well as a sun catfish (also about 7"). I have 2 bichir with them, which work great.

Generally peaceful, non-aggressive, non-boisterous fish are better potential tankmates. But I've found that I enjoy the tank better when their are fewer tankmates to compete with the natural beauty of our ancient fishy friends :).
