Hey,
currently I am building the stand for a new tank.
It will be a 180x80x60cm/ 70.8in by 31.5in by 23.6in tank I will receive in around 1 month.
That's pretty much the largest tank possible in my current house.

What am I getting this tank for?
Well... I don't know yet.
My largest bichir is around 10in long and perfectly fine in the 78.7in by 19.6in tank for the next couple of years.
What would you get for this tank keeping in mind that once my Polypterus hit 40cm they will be moved into it?
I can't get large datnoids in Germany so I am growing them out myself but it will take so many years before they can go into that tank that I don't even consider them when planning the stock.

Apparently Cichla kelberi will outgrow this tank so I will not get them.
A Jardini would be too risky.
A CB spotted gar would be one of my favorites but I'd have to grow it out to a decent size in the smaller tanks as well.
Scobina rays...well yea but with Polypterus?
I've read horrible stories of Polys ripping off the tail of rays.
A flag tail most likely will damage the slime coat of tha gar and bichirs so do large plecos.
I do have four Astronotus cf. crassipinnis which would be ok in there.
Or maybe four black widow frontosas I could get at the moment for quite a decent prize (which would have to stay in small tanks for a year or two as well cause I am already paying 30 Euro per 4cm juvenile).
A tigrinus catfish will get too big...

Please feel free to leave your ideas below!

Geo's Crenicichla, datnoids, large Oscars. I've kept Rays and bichirs together for years without any ever issues. Maybe a school of silver dollara
You don't need to wait for your bichirs to get bigger to go in the big tank, move em when you can and then you can use the smaller tank for different projects

Hey,
I used to keep almost every species of silverdollar but sold all of them in 2019 so it's too early for me to get back into SDs again.
I like the looks of Geophagus but I hate keeping them I've tried several times but they just aren't my fish.
Scobina or reticulatus rays would be a dream but I do have a somewhat nippy Polypterus bichir bichir...

How many more lower jaws will be in the tank.

The biggest consideration has to be feeding. Large cichlids are great fish but depending on the species getting food to the polys was always the biggest issue. I found allot of success with herbivorous cichlids. 70 inches might be too small for a jardini but that would be my choice.

Ive tried allot of different combos with my polys and the easiest was having 1 center peice fish surrounded by a load of polys

Hey,
I do have:
2 CB Ansorgii x Endlicheri
2 CB Endlicheri
1 CB lapradei Koliba
1 CB bichir bichir
1 WC lapradei Nigeria
But I don't know if all them will be moved into that tank (I've got 8 more tanks) since all of them but the Nigerian lap are CB and not likely to grow to 20in or larger.
I was thinking about getting some WC endli and congicus to have some specimen that really will grow to a decent size.

I know a jardini would be fine for several years but rehoming it when it outgrows the tank would be a challenge.
Sure the tank is super wide but I don't know if it compensates for the missing lengths of the tank.

Another idea would be one or two CB spotted gars and Hydrolycus scomberoides but I don't know if the Scombs get large enough in an aquarium.
Their body is quite slender making it possible for a bichir to grab it by the tail fin.
