Tank Mates For Pacus

I had a Pacu housed with a Green Terror and a Fire Mouth.... Everything was fine then the Pacu EXPLODED in size and obviously he took over the tank, ate the other two.....


2 questions...One in a 30 Gallon tank...will he stop growing or will he keep growing regardless of the tank size?

Two...if he will stop growing is there any type of fish that can be housed with a pacu that he won't eat?

I'm a intermediate fish keeper, but a beginner with the "Monsters"...hahaha

you say you have a 30 gallon tank? you need about 100 times that for a pacu they get huge like 30+ inches.

You call yourself intermediate yet you think a pacu will stop growing in a 30G? A full grown black pacu will need at least 1200G's of space. Some people might say less but these fish can swim fast and are quite active.

I would say a redbellied pacu needs a 10x4x3 tank! Right now I have a 22" in a 750 (8roundx2.5) and I think he needs a bigger space! I am going to build a larger tank for him next summer though. And NO, a fish in a smaller tank will not stop growing, they will stop growing on the outside because there is no room for them, but their insides will keep on growing and growing until they eventually die! And that is what I call a slow and painful death!!

No I didn't think they would stop, but that's what I was told recently. So I decided to look on here and asked people with a whole lot more experience with PAcus then me....I did say I was a beginner with the Monster fish. This all started when I planned on selling him to a local fish store because I thought he was getting to big...

why did you get him in the first place? how long did it take for him to get too big, about a week?

I've had him for 6months now his about 6-8 inches long...been this big for a month now...I got him because I made the mistake of listening to people at what i thought was a "reputable" Fish store...I know now they just wanted to make a sale. Look guys I'm just trying to do right by this fish...flame me if you wish, just give me valuable info at the same time...and Yes I did go out and find a new fish store....

get rid of him, he will definetely outgrow that tank.
