Im looking for a generalized list of other fish species that are good with polypterus. Take away things like tank size, fish size etc etc. All id like is the other speices name. Any help would be great. :D

umm, other polypterus, nething they cant eat, and notheing that can eat them, that just about summs it up right???:D

no aggressive cichlids or plecos. cichlids eat all the food and pleco can develop a taste for slime coat. i agree with grman also.

Compatibility, the reality
When asked "will they get along ?" Sometimes the answer is as simple as yes or no, The truth is we speak in generalities some fish in theory should be ok together some not.The long broad sweeping statements are flawed as they are generalities I think we all know generalities are just opinions , but because we are dealing with animals each with its own personality its flawed. This question is harder with predatory fish, due to their natural habits ,predation! where they naturaly feed on the smaller , the weaker and the sick, claim territory and defend it . The actual answer is we don't know it's our best guess that they should or shouldn't get along.I know one of my bichirs is highly agressive which is completely different from what i have been told, so he's in his own tank , my others all conspecifics seem fine together which is oppisite from what i have read and been told. Its a case of trial and error to some extent and depends on the individual animal. When introducing a new animal into the territory of an established animal try rearanging the tank it tends to remove reference points for territoriality but most important watch for trouble and stop it before it goes to far.

I guess i should have listed why i wanted such broad statments made. Im not new to fish, ive been keeping fish for well over 10 years. Im also not new to Polypterus, i know theyre "average" temperment. I also know every fish has its own temperment and personality and moods. I also know to research fish before i buy them. That being said im one of those people who dont mind selling fish, for example if they get to big or if i just want a change, this is the reason i said dont use tank size etc for the list, seeing how people will talk down to you or tell you to upgrade to a larger tank before ever going out one suggestion. Now to a point i do agree for those fish that get MASSIVE and fast (pacu for example) but for fish slower growing and with a smaller (yet still large) adult size i think its pointless and stupid. Also i detest people who talk down to others for some of the reason ive listed. But beblondie thank you for the list, there are some i completely disagree with for size or agression reasons but as a whole its a good list.

From my 30+ years of keeping bichirs I've arrived at a few of generalities that I always keep in mind when picking tank-mates for my Polypterids:

1) Bichirs are generally non-aggressive and often will not defend themselves vigorously against aggressive fish. Even moderately-sized cichlids can cause major difficulties for bichirs if the cichlids are 'in the mood' or are extraordinarily territorial. Interestingly, I've had success keeping bichirs with pike cichlids but had absolutely horrible luck trying to keep them with the bottom-dwelling riverine cichlids like Steatocranus or Teleogramma. Large 'sharks' (Labeo and the like) can also cause significant problems as can some of the larger barbs. Some of the more aggressive catfish species can present problems as well. I've had difficulties with North American bullheads and Asian and African species of 'Walking Catfish' (Clarias) as well (before possession of Clariids was illegal in Texas).

2) Exceptionally 'toothy' fish aren't always a real problem with bichirs. Fish that are adapted to remove pieces of other fish (like piranhas) or specialized fin/scale eaters like Phago or Ichthyborus are not good choices but I've actually kept bichirs with like-sized wolf fish (Hoplias) without any major problems. Lungfish and the Aba Aba don't make particularly good tank-fellows for bichirs either.

3) Fish that develop a taste for bichir 'slime' are not a good idea. This includes most 'pleco'-type catfish and even the occasional Synodontis catfish (though I've usually had good luck keeping many species of this genus with bichirs). Obviously, specialized 'parasitic' fish like the Candirus or lampreys aren't great tank-mates either.

4) I've never had any interest in risking my bichirs with 'strongly electric' fish like Malapterurus (the electric catfish).

4) In general...if the bichir can't eat it...and it won't eat the bichir or get violently territorial...it can be used as a bichir tank-mate.

excellently stated preface Anne, well done! and a great list of possibilities to start with. One other thing I constantly have to remind myself of, is to always have an empty tank available when adding a new tankmate to an already established setup! So often when I have a problem fish, I move it from one tank to another, trying to find which place will cause the least amount of damage, when in reality, it just might need it's own tank! I've lost too many fish while waiting for everybody to just settle down. Compatibility takes constant monitoring!:)

Can they go in a 125 gal tank with various sized Frontosa? The Bicher is only a baby about 2 inches... or should i wait until it has grown more? Thanks
