Hi Guys this is my first post so hi to you all, great forum. I have a question for you guys - I have kept fish for many years mostly african cichlids and marine. I've recently got in to bigger American cichlids.
The tank I have now is 380L so about 100US Gallon. I know this will prob need upgrading at some point it its big enough for now... i think!?!?!
Its home to my breeding pair of vieja synspilum (stunning fish and great parents they are about 20cm the male maybe a little bigger), my golden red spot sev (he is about 13cm), a few bristle nose and (don’t laugh) a pair of blue rams – the rams believe it or not are fine with all the fish in the tank...crazy, i thought they would be lunch!
Anyway each time my synspilum spawn and have fry with them my sev gets the sh*t kicked out of him. I’d like to add a type of dither fish to ask as a bit of a distraction. I’m not a big fan of silver dollars but what’s a fairly sturdy shoaling fish that keeps mid to top range? I’ve been looking at giant danios?? I know they are from different waters but are big enough, colourful and will live happily in the water conditions... just not sure how they would get on with the tank mates... Any suggestions?
Also ive been offered a juvenile green terror he’s about 2.5 / 3 inch in siz and is stunning already... a friend of mine bought him without doing his home work and now wants to get rid of him... what would be your thoughts on him going in, try him and see or leave it?

Hope to hear back from you guys soon.

I'm sure you'll hear lots of opinions but mine is that you're already stocked full. Some dithers will just give the Vieja something to beat up before they beat the Sev up. I most certainly wouldn't add a Green Terror to the mix at this point. You might try the bigger Sev with the juvie GT in a different tank. I know "100 gallons" sounds like a lot of water. But not to the fish when you start adding more fish, plus you've got a breeding pair of Vieja.

Ok cool. i'll leave the dithers for now then and see how it goes just feel a bit mean on my sev, its not constant but the vieja really dont like him. The female is actually worse than the male! I think the sev should just grow a pair and fight back haha.

Female fish seem more aggressive than males to me, too :-) Do you blame the poor Sev? Most human males wouldn't go up against a mad human female either lol

I don't think you have enough room in a 100 gallon tank for a pair of mating Synspillums and an oddball Severum. Personally I would trade the severum for a few target fish....like a few filament barbs or maybe some arulius barbs.

haha ok no GT. I thought about breaking them up but everything I have read have said how hard they are to pair so dont really want to split them up.... hmmm think i have the decision to make. I'm either going to get rid of the pair of synspila or keep them and get rid of the others as its unfair on the sev.... hmmm shame :-(
