Hey,
I have a 4 ft tank and have 2 bolivian butterflies, 1 jack dempsey, 1 bristlenose catfish and 1 marble angelfish. i want to add more and keep mainly to the american cichlid area. what would be some good fish to add?
p.s. i would rather colourful fish as it is a display tank.

First, ask a mod to move this to the CA/SA cichlid subforum. \

Next, although jds (jack dempseys) are not as aggressive as other cichlids, they are on a different level than brs (bolivian rams). BRs stay small and although they are somewhat aggressive as dwarf cichlids will never attain the size and possible aggressiveness of a jd. I'm just trying to inform you. I would move that jd to a different tank if possible.

Tankmates suitable to live with brs are german rams, curviceps, possibly firemouths, different species of appistogrammas, apistogrammoides, and dicrossus,. Add more angelfish, discus and uarus.

Other fish that are not cichlids are different plecos that stay small, less than 10". There are some.

Gouramis (spelling?) are good as well.

Soko is correct on all accounts. JDs are plainly wrong with all those fish.:shakehead

what fish are you trying to set your tank around?? JD? Angel? BR?

if you remove the dempsey and replace with a more peaceful smaller South American species like festivum or blue acara (which superficially has some minor resemblance to the dempsey) it will work out better long term

Depends what the JD is like, my biggest JD wouldn't hurt a fly. Either way there is more chance the JD will have a bad day and leave some if-not most of those other fish floating.
