I know this question is asked a lot here, but I'm trying to find good tank mates for the smaller bichirs (senegalus and delhezi) that look good, preferably with a sort of prehistoric look like the bichirs, which will occupy the middle or upper strata of the tank, and will preferably thrive in my water (pH 7.9, 4 dkH).

The african butterfly fish looks PERFECT except for the water parameters. They supposedly require slightly acidic or close to neutral water.
Ctenopoma also look nice, but they're said to like slightly acidic water too.
Would they be ok?

I know there's a list, but it's really really hard to sift through them and it's usually pretty hard to tell if they do well in my water. It'd also be nice to know how I can change the water parameters slowly without damaging the bichirs and without spending too much money.

I also know I already have a thread called "biotope tankmates," but I'm not too worried about the biotope part any more and it kind of turned into a discussion of how bichirs are a food fish.

So far I've googled every fish on the compatibility list and I still only came up with ctenopoma and african butterfly fish. The only problem is both of them are said to like slightly acidic water, but my water is up there at 7.9.
Can they handle the pH? Peat is going to stain my water brown, which I really don't want to happen.

That's why you do a water change. Why use peat when you can use driftwood to lower your ph. BTW bichirs like a sligly acidic water as well.

As for tank mates if you wanna keep them in ph:7.9. Get yourself some African cichlids or Madagascar cichlids. I don't think you can find a upper dwelling fish that lives in ph:7.9. Most smaller upper dwelling fish lives in a planted area or close to shore which is sliglty acidic. Only mid-dwelling fish are cichlids. African cichlids is the only choice your going to have.

U Really should lower PH... It will also give u soooooo many more options for tankmates! I Lower my Ph by using Indian Almond leaves! I wudnt buy them in a shop though they are usually crappy quality... here is link,I ordered some a while ago, they come in great condition!

All info on how to use em are in the link... they also look great in Tank with Bichir..
My bichir loves to hide in among the Leaves

Just do some water changes and The 'Brown water' should go away

or use activated carbon in the filter
