Going to be getting some more EBJD here shortly (hopefully). Looking for some good tank mates with them. I have had problems in the past adding stuff. They either killed everything or got killed themselves.

Its going to go in a 40B. Not wanting much, just something else with some color.

I believe your previous results are typical for for a cichlid put in a space that amounts to be the size of a puddle.
In nature JDs hold a territory of about 250 gallons, I have watched males defend an area of 4ftL X 4ftW X 4ftH.
The term 40 breeder was coined for aquarists that breed tiny fish, like guppies, swordtails or zebra danios, fish that can actually survive in puddles.
Below is an example of where JDs live in nature.

I agree that tank size may be the answer. Some species (or individuals) can be crowded or kept in smaller than ideal tanks, but others, not always known for aggression, don't like being crowded and respond with more aggression than in a larger tank. I've taken 'killer' fish off people's hands, put them in a larger tank, and had them turn into model citizens. Sometimes just the difference between a 36x18 and 48x18 tank makes all the difference.

My previous EBJD's have been kept in a 75g tank pretty much as their own tank minus a couple small plecos. They would kill stuff that I would put in there to try and grow out little for my 240g. I know 75g aint much bigger than 40b but the fish were all still pretty small.

Some would disagree, but I think a JD could live a happy life as a wet pet in a 75g. 40b, not so much.

I had a JD that was super shy in a 6' tank. Turned into a killer when I put it in a 4' tank.

Not saying tank size was the only factor as the fish was older when it went from a 135g to a 90g, and I know that some fish get more aggressive when they mature into adults. But I do think tank size played a part. A significant part.

My senior citizen JD is in a 75g right now and he doesn't give two hoots about any of the other fish. He's the OG and they all know it.
