could i take my 150 72x18x28, place it on its side, silicone a piece of glass where the top is currently, and take out the front piece of glass so the dimensions would then be 72x28x18?

I don't see why not, as long as you put in a thick enough piece of glass and then re-braced the top. I'm assuming it's braced now?

Won't be quite that easy, though. You'll have to remove all the old silicone seals and completely reseal your tank once the new piece is in because new silicone won't bond with cured silicone and you could very well have leaks where the new and old overlap.

The tank bracing is designed the other way around so you might run into a few problems. Most manufacturers use thicker glass (or tempered glass) on the bottom because its carrying most of the water pressure. You could always make a new frame from parts carried by glasscages.com I suppose but I question if all of the effort would be worth it.
