jw, what ur guys opinions would be on whether to get a tank or pond. My parents told me if i get a tank bigger than 200gallons it has to go in the basement or i pay to add more support to the floor, so i was wondering what would u guys choose a 350 gallon glass tank with stand or a 500gallon rubbermaid pond to go in the basement. This will be for peacock bass, so if i get pond i kno i will have to make a cover or raise the wall of it so that they do not jump out. The reason i am asking is there is a 350gallon tank next to me with the wet dry, stand, and hood for $1000, but for that same amount i could set up a 500 gallon pond in the basement so i don't kno which to do.

Will you go down to the basement or will it get to be too much trouble?

Personally I'd go large and go underground ;).

well if i go with pond it will be sitting on the floor of my cement basement. the problem is i have no experience with a pond or any fish over 10 inches on top of that lol so i dont kno what kind of filtration im looking at here. Would a wet/dry filter be enough? or do i need a sump tank and if i do how big? what kind of heating am i looking at? also is a wet/dry filter enough or will i need oxygen pump? and anything else im missing that i need? what this all stuff im trying to figure out now because the 350gallon glass tank has everything but the heater.

I have a couple big tanks (100+ gal)… and I have a 300 gal Rubbermaid…

Glass/Acrylic tanks can be much more decorative and made to be furniture quality… a big gray Rubbermaid container looks like a big gray container… not very pretty…

Open top ponds can cause moisture issues… I highly suggest you plan for this before you get one… aquariums can be easily covered and evaporation controlled…

Glass/Acrylic aquariums offer you a MUCH better view of your fish… the top view has taken some getting used to and I fully admit even while watching the pond I miss a lot due to the angle…

If I was forced to reduce my collection to one tank… it would not be a solid walled pond… it would definitely be a clear walled aquarium…

But all that said… the coolest tank I’ve ever owned is my 300 gal Rubbermaid… I wouldn’t trade it for the world…

I have a pond filter (Bio-Force 2000) powered by a Mag 18 (I’ve tried Mag 12, 18 & 24... The filter functions best at 18). The water stays very clear but the tank could use some more current to push the waste to the filter… I previously had the Mag 24 creating current and the Mag 12 running the filter… This combination worked very well.

For a 500 Gal round tank I would say a pair of Pond Filters @ 1800 gph… and maybe one more 1800 gph pump for current only… but I’m a heavily filtration junky…
