So simple quistion here is it safe for a tank to over hang the stand. This is something i never do and personaully allways have thought it wouldnt be real safe. Pics are here for reference. I have this old school desk i thought would be cool for this standard 29 im setting up. It will over hang side to side 3 inches on each side if left this way. I was going to place the top with a bigger one and use it that way. I think it would be cooler thow to leave the original top on it thow. Any thought, comments, or ideas are appreciated thanks for your time guys.

Do NOT do this, it will crack. Standard tanks of this size are designed to have their weight supported by the rim, not by the actual glass in the middle.

makes sence. Pretty much what i was thinking. thanks for the reply

dont do it; not a good idea... for a standard 30g tank you could find cheap used stands almost every where...
buy a used one and if you want make changes or repaint it & etc...

+1 go to your local used goods store and buy a table or stand for cheap. For my 35gal I found a long heavy duty night stand for 10 bucks. And I must say it looks 10x more durable and sturdy than the store bought stands on my larger tanks.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I was just thinking of doing this for the look because the like the school desk its pretty cool. I dont know why the pics i posted are so small i have never had that happen. But one of my diy stands is in the back ground. i make my stands usually. The store ones i would never put something as heavy as a tank on they are trash. I think im going to still use this and just throw a new top on it. Or i will just diy another one. Diddnt figure it would be a good idea to let one hang over. Thats why i threw it on here for you guys to back up the statement. thanks for your time guys.

mmm I have been thinking about this but with 1 inch difference back to front.

you say the tank has to be supported around the edge? so this means if wood of X thickness + foam was placed on the stand giving the extra 2inch width it would be safe as all the edges will be flat on the wood which would send the pressure into the stand. Correct?

A front-to-back difference would scare me more just because then there is an even larger amount of rim not supported. On a smaller tank (30-40 gallons or less) I would feel safe with 1 inch ply to make up the difference, but that's just IMO, YMMV.

so despite the fact the pressure is going to be forced onto the steel stand you still would not do it?

I dont know :S I am looking at as the pressure cant sit airborn so it has to move onto something hitting the ground due to the poly, but with no poly the pressure falls into the glass which is over hanging causing the glass to apply to the pressure to the air/stand = crack ?

Maybe I just have to get some customs made lol
