So I currently have three 4-5" red bellies in a 200l tank, had them since they were babies but I'm looking for a new tank. Getting something massive is not an option. My current tank is 2ft long by 3ft high...it is a huge pain in the ass to clean. Was wondering if a longer (4ft), shallower (1.5ft) tank with a bit less volume would be an ok move for them. Have read that piranha really need a larger tank footprint more than overall volume.
Please help :(

A 4'long by 18" wide tank should be min for those 3
Prob get away with 12" wide 55g tank
But a 75g or 90g will be way better. If u can get bigger is always better but ones I posted should be min

Skip the pain of constantly upgrading and get a 6'x18"x2' aka 125gal or 4'x2'x2' aka 120gal with a big canister (fx5 or 6/eheim 2262/sump) and a 1200-1500gph circulator, preferably hydor evo series and a jager 300watt heater is fine, all this apart from the 125 can be found at petmountain.com or drfosterssmith.com with free s&h.

If on a budget look on CL or classifieds for the tank and filter, eventually one will pop up, negotiate and your good. Pfs is a cheap substrate that utilizes the filter as the **** doesn't sink into gravel and of course pothos will help with nitrate reduction aka less wc.

Trust me my shoal started out in a 55 transferred to a 90 then finally to a 125, its a ***** moving healthy/active adult Rbp.

And lastly if you don't have the means to provide a big enough forever home get rid of two of them or their gonna Max out at 6" or so. I've seen 3 yr old rbp at 6" a couple times kept in small conditions.

Lastly/lastly the best thing to do right now is keep nitrates <30ppm meaning at least bi weekly 50% wc in your case. Try and match fresh water temp with tank water to reduce stress and keep temps <77°!

Here's my shoals forever home
