Stopped by my lfs tonight and picked up a couple silvers. The owner mentioned that their supplier said these were tank raised. Not sure if its true but figured I'd share, as Datnoid breeding is always a popular topic.

If they are breeding them then it will benefit Dat lovers alot.

They will become easier to obtain
They will become hardier over time.
They will become cheaper. They were selling them at 2-3" for $14.99
They will most likely be bred in fresh water so adapting them from brackish to fresh wont be a poblem.

Hopefully its true.:grinno:

If you could get some more info from the LFS, like who the supplier was etc I'd be interested. A LFS near me said the same thing about Indos but after asking a few more questions it became clear they had no real idea where the fish came from other then our 'distributor' or our 'wholesaler' and all their fish were tank raised.

I just don't believe most pet stores know where there fish actually come from, and half the time they don't even know the behaviors of the fish...

I'll see if they will give me the name of the supplier.

I don't believe the guy i spoke to was assuming they were tank raised just because everything else might be from that supplier. I got the impression, he was telling me because he thought it was "breaking news" in Dat keeping.

I'm not saying that I am taking it as fact, just simply repeating what I heard. I tend to believe that there has not been any successful breeding as well, as I have stated in threads in the past.

I always assumed that the all of the small indos that flooded the market were the result of hormone-induced breeding or removing sperm and eggs from adult dats to artificially produce fry.

I don't see why this wouldn't be plausible, since they I hear they do it with other fish like clown loaches (hormone-induced breeding), and since indos have been classically cheaper and more common than STs (a supplier/breeder/whatever would rather sacrifice cheaper indos than an $T for sperm and eggs).

A while ago someone posted a documentary about datnoids in several pieces, and one of the clips showed (presumably) reproductive organs that had been removed from dats. I'm not sure exactly why as the video was in another language, but I'd be willing to bet it was to try artificially breeding them

Just my 2 cents worth...

Yea The fact that there are so many Indos and at small sizes, and alot of different markings (split bars, 3bar/4bar, half bars) would suggest some sort of breeding is being done, but until I see some proof, I am going to remain doubtful.

Were there anymore? I'm looking for some

Yea they had about 4 more, they are at the same place you stole my Pulcher from:D. They have had them for about a week and a half. They ate when I was there, and ate frozen krill as soon as they were in my tank.
