I recently scored a damaged, reef ready 180 gallon tank for free. Other than the cracked pane, the tank is in excellent shape. It was apparently only used for 3 months before it was cracked while moving.

I had originally thought about tearing down the tank and either replacing the back pane or stealing the front for a plywood/glass tank. I have researched tearing down the tank and, frankly, I think it would be a ROYAL pita. The glass is thick and this thing is SOLID and eurobraced.

While thoughts of getting rid of it have crossed my mind, I have come up with another idea and I would like your feedback.

The damage consists of 3 cracks that go essentially top to bottom in the rear left corner. They use no more than the first 8" of the rear pane.

Could I silicone 8" panes over the cracked portion on front and back, then silicone in a "new" side panel inside of the repaired portion.

Basically this would convert my 72" tank to a 64" tank with no water pressure on the damaged area whatsoever. I would just use black paint on the front and original side pane to keep the repair and false side out of sight.

Your thoughts?

Nobody?? Will pics of the damage help?

I don't see why that wouldn't work. I'm not sure what benefit siliconing glass panels over the cracked portion will have, though. You may be fine just putting in the new side panel inside of the cracked portion, so that you have a 64" tank.

I'm not a glass maker but theoretically, it sounds like it could work. I suggest you contact a glass company and explain what you're trying to do. Get an expert opinion.

I cover the crack on the inside with a piece and also put a bigger piece on the outside been running for over 2 years with no leaks.... I'll see if I can find a pic

Sounds like it would work.
