Tank revarnish

Hello everyone,
Just had a quick question. Does anyone know if I can re-varnish an aquarium stand. It's black now but I want to varnish it to a dark brown. Is this possible?

If it's made of solid wood/plywood then it shouldn't be a problem, but if it's a particleboard stand with a plastic veneer than you would be better off leaving it alone.

You can but you might need to strip the old paint or varnish.
