ok so im making my order for my new tank
and i was wondering which size would be able to house my azul and other pbass in for life
i was thinking either 96x36x24 or a shorter but wider tank 72x40x24
i have one azul i kno im keeping 5 monos that im gona grow out and keep the ones i like best and rehome the others

all the help and suggestion would be much appreciated thanks

Get the slighlty wider tank.. much better IMO..

I would go with the 96x36x24 because it has 2 more extra feet for the bass to swim around and 4" off the width shouldn't matter that much to an adult bass. Not saying that they can't reach 36".

Yeah alot of tank "guesstimates" are taken from maximum fish size in the wild. In reality a person would be fairly lucky to grow a fish to world record size in their home aquarium. The fish continue to grow their entire life but growth slows to like half of the year before for each year going forward. So its something like 12" the first year, 6" the next, 3" the next, etc. Thats not true in every case but that is kind of what could be expected in good conditions. a 36" wide tank should last a solid 3 even 4 years if the fish are acquired at less than a year old. 96 x 36 x 24 are good demensions. In my opinion if you could get a 96 x 48 x 24 you would probably never need another tank unless you had alot of fish.

your keeping em in it for life then get as big as possible. do it right the first time. Not fair keeping a 2 foot fish in a tank thats 2 foot wide.

the dimensions in question are not 2 feet wide but 2 feet high

I understand what you're saying but wife says those are the only "approved" size I can get might he able to convince her to a 72x48 but thats it

Between the two tanks listed, the first one is much better. That 2' of extra length will benefit you MUCH more than the extra 6" of width. 3' of width is plenty for all but the biggest of cichla.

I do realise this. But what im saying is no matter what, in my opinion, you should always get the biggest you can have, spance and finance wise. Cichla are not only large fish but also lightning fast and can cover a large distance in a small amount of time.

Im the kind of person that no matter what ive kept, be fish or reptiles, i like them to be comfortable an always have ample room. :)
