IN YOUR HEAD
i have a 55gal right now going and i have been thinking about getting a 40 breeder to replace it. would the 40 breeder be better then the 55gal or vice versa?

the stock for it right now would be/is

piccasso trigger
spotted grouper
sailfin tang
clownfish
blue damsel
lunar wrasse
scooter blenny

i will be making a reef project that i will be putting the clownfish, damsel and scooter blenny in before they become food sized.

i will be using my 120gal that is my current gar tank for them when the time comes, so i have that part covered. the gar will be moved from my 120gal into my 180gal or a 300gal wide or a 450gal after my aros and cats are in the pond. so i am looking for a good mid term tank that is better then a 55gal in the width and that i could use later for another mini reef setup.

it is just the 40 breeders are on sale for $40 by me and it got me thinking after i got my new one for my gar growouts. i was also thinking of picking up a 90gal from a friend, but that is $300 and i am breaking my bank account getting 3 cuban gars so i am thinking cheap and functional for my current needs since i have the future covered. if that makes sense.

Ah, gotcha. I'd go with the 40 breeder then because it has a little bit more floor space than the 55 gallon.

alright thats kinda what i was thinking, but wanted another opinion before i went and made the switch. now that my pump came in for the 120gals sump i'll finish that project up to start on the 40breeder changeover.

now i am thinking of getting white sand for the 40breeder instead of my black sand i have in the 55gal now. (i want to put that in the 40 breeder growout) i think that since all the filters and my 55+ lbs of rock are established and just changing water just doing the sand swap will have little to no effect on the new tanks setup. so in theory i don't need to cycle this new setup since 90% has been running for a few years.

Personally I would not put that tang or that grouper in anything less than a 120g. 180g would be preferred. They require a lot of water. The grouper might eat your smaller fish on that list also.

Maybe look into a kole yellow eye tang and a convict tang (same color as your spotted grouper) in a 120g, and then drop the grouper all together since your going reef eventually. :D
