Saw a 2x1x1 tank in the dumpster today, and am contemplating salvaging it after work to breed feeder convicts. What do you guys think? Bad Idea?

I know i will have to test the seals for leakage or reseal the whole tank if the seams are in bad condition. I will probably also soak it in salter water to get rid of any microorganism. And I will let it sit for a few days in the yard to make sure it doesn't leak or burst. Anything else??

Dont see any reason not to keep it. I have salvaged a few tanks myself abandoned in garages and things for years. I usually use bleach(like 5% with water) or vinegar to clean old nasty tanks. Both are safe if used appropriately and work well. If it has old crusty mineral deposits vinegar works well. Otherwise I scrub with a bleach solution, rinse, and let dry then you are ready to go.

mdb_talon >> Thanks for the tip on bleach and vinegar. :D

The only reason I have for not taking a discarded tank is the constant paranoia that it will burst on me at any moment. :)

GET IT!

you never know when you might find yourself needing a tank for a variety of reasons. it could sit around for years, but that one time you need it, you'll be glad you got iy for free and dident have to spend money buying it new.
