tank separator

i am using a tank separator that is basically like a grid. dont know how else to describe it but its white and it has squares holes in it like a grid basically and my question is can the separator make a difference in the water quality from one side of the tank to the other?

if the wholes are open then it shouldnt make a difference from one side to another. Its called an egg crate, you can get it from lowes or home depot in the section for ceiling light covers.
