Hi. New to site. Just completed my new home and now can focus on the set up and operation of my new 500 gal saltwater tank. When all is said and done I want to hold a few sharks. Looking for advice on which type to look for and what other fish they may be compatible with. Thinking of the Bonnet. I am not new to aquaculture as in the 90s I designed, built and ran the largest indoor private trout hatchery in western Canada. I know technology has changed since then so looking for as much input as I can get. J

welcome to mfk.

Unfortunately the tank is far to small for a bonnet.

We'll need more info from the fallowing categories to properly recommend species-

Any suggestions for a shark? I am thinking of travelling out to the west coast and catching a couple of spiny dog fish. I have done years of live fish transports. The males only grow to a max of 3-4'

Can't answer your questions until you answer thekids... Also, even though I am not familiar with California law, what you are suggesting with the spiny dog fish is probably highly illegal in multiple ways.

Dimensions are important. If you are still in Canada send benthic sharks a message and see what they have.

Spiny dogfish will need cooler water and 500 gallons might still be to small depending on the dimensions. A 3ft shark should still have at least ~6ft width. There is a store called "Gulf of Maine" that sells dogfish for $50.

If you are going to do coldwater from the west coast try and grab some swell sharks.

As they have all said the tank footprint means way more than volume/gallons. Please provide the dimensions and we will reccomend the best options.

A 500 gallon tank (normally a huge tank) is going to be way too small for a bonnet or any active ORV shark. You should look into the Less active swimming sharks like bamboo and cat sharks. Good luck and keep us updated as we would love to have another frequent MFK user.
