Hey guys looking for some help with this 180 gallon i picked up a while ago. It came with a dual durso overflow setup. I need to get new bulkhead fittings as they were broken when the tank was moved by the previous owner.

Looking for some help on the sump and what size i should go with. I know bigger is better. I’ll have a 75 gallon tank I’ll be taking down that i could turn into a sump if i want to. If i go this route i will have to make my stand a little taller for it to fit under it.

Any help/ advise is appreciated this will be my first sump system and what i consider to be a “big” tank.

Nice pickup, what size holes are inside the overflows, and how many holes? It might be a good idea to use the return bulkheads as drains and plumb the returns over the top of the tank.

I'd go with the 75 for a sump but if its going to be a pain to alter the stand then maybe go with a 40 breeder but ull have to make sure there is enough space in the sump to hold the water from the main tank if power goes out

Wouldn’t be to big of a deal i would just need a few 2x6s i think that would give me enough space so i could reach in the sump for cleaning and what not

If it we're me I'd use both holes and setup herbie overflows in each weir. I'm going to guess that there are holes for a 1" and 3/4" bulkheads in each weir. Id use the 3/4 as the full syphon with a gate valve on it and use the 1" as the secondary drain setup as open channel. I'd suggest using two return pumps and plumb then independently over the rim of the tank in 1" pvc. If you drill a small hole just above the water line that will brake the syphon on power loss.
I'd think that you could get away with a 40b as the sump, there shouldn't be be too much water coming back on power loss.

It’s been a little while sense I’ve done some research on a sump but i do remember reading about the herbie method and that does seem like my best option. I was also hoping that a 40 breeder size would work for a sump as i can probably pick one up fairly cheap.
