i have a 125 that i plan on putting a dovii and jag in,what type of environment do they like best? rocks, driftwood plants?

If both the Dovii and Jag are male, there will be mahem when they get around 5". If there is a male/female combo, they might bond, but the larger will likely end up killing the smaller. If you get the jag and dovii when they are both around 1", there is a small chance they will grow up together in peace, but avoid feeding live food else bring out the aggression in the fish.

If you put a divider in, you can entertain yourself watching the fish flare up at each other w/o injury to fish. If you have a male dovii, he will outgrow your tank eventually.

To answer your question, don't waste time on plants as both these fish are avid diggers. Rocks, caves, and hiding places are great for these fish. Wood is a matter of preference. They are both fairly tolerant of water conditions so just avoid extremes and your fish will be happy.

I don't want to sound negative (because believe me, I try all sorts of weird stuff), but I just want you to watch out for potential problems you face with your proposed set up.

Good Luck!

Agreed. Light on the decor and pick one or the other. I would go Jag since your talking a 125 and a male Dovii will outgrow it. Wait for Mojo to hook Jeff Rapps up with some of his Honduran Jags. Those are insane. You can see them in the long thread here in the forums. Here is the link to the thread. Breath taking.

As others said, this is a recipe for trouble. A 125 is too small for a dovii and most large jags. Also, the two are too closely related to be able to get along well in less than a huge tank.

THe 125 should be fine for single jag and a bunch of dithers for quite a while. I you get a male, you may need to upgrade eventually, but that would be in a couple of years.

thanks but i didnt really want to get the ususal "of that tank is to small" i appriciate the input i feel that tank if ifne for them these fish live in 10g tanks in a store half the time and the male is jag female is dovii and they are bonded

but it is...and theyre 2 separate species...you should separate them so that your next question isnt the same ol "what should i sell the fry as, dovii or jags?" or something just as ridiculous that we see almost weekly on here.

Sounds like you have it all figured out. As far as tank contents...rocks and driftwood are better than plants.

i wanted to put my male jag with my female she ichin to mate but my femal is bigger
and shell prolly kill him...
most aggresive CA/SA cichlids can get along but if they dont watch out!!

As for the fish are in 10g tanks theory. You could move into a broom closet, but you wouldn't be comfortable or healthy either. There are plenty of fish that can live in a 125 for life. perhaps try one of them.

listen bro
even a 125 could be small for the jag alone..
tankmates might not be able to thrive in a small tank with tankbusters.
that said.. scrap the idea of a jag and dovi because parachromis hate eachother more than anything else.
i suggest go with just the jag because they tend to be wayyy more accepting of tankmates.
