i have a 30g tank sitting around (i know its small) but i was wondering if there are any smaller fish that i could put in it that are still cool fish to have. im fine if its a one fish tank.

It'd make a nice snail tank. I know of someone from Massachusetts who also keeps snails. She may be able to do snail exchanges with you.:)

Here are some snail-safe tankmates.;)

Loaches
Hillstream loaches
Kuhli loaches
Weather loaches

Several other species especially those of botiine genus tend to prey on snails. Believe it or not, invertebrates are their primary diet so it is not surprising to see them attempting to pry off the snails to eat them.

Cypriniformes
Harlequin rasboras (Trigonostigma heteromorpha)
Hengeli rasboras (Trigonostigma hengeli)
Espei rasboras (Trigonostigma espei)
White cloud mountain minnows
Celestial pearl danios
Rasbora boraptensis
Boraras maculatus
Boraras merah
Boraras brigittae
Siamese Algae Eaters (Crossocheilus siamensis)
Garra flavatra
Garra cambodgiensis
Garra taeniata

Anabantids
Honey gouramis
Sparkling gouramis
Licorice gouramis
Chocolate gouramis
Samurai gouramis
Pearl gouramis

The only issue is most species mentioned above prefer acidic waters so I am sure shell erosion would be a problem there although these fish won't bother them in any way possible.

Catfish (aside from corydoras and plecos)
Hara hara
Glass catfish
Agamyxis pectifrons
Platydoras costatus

Cichlids
This seems a hit or miss. The following listed are possible but don't keep your hopes up they will thrive together.

Bolivian rams
Apistogrammas

Livebearers
Guppies
Platies
Swordtails
Mollies (not all will work)

Others

try looking up either blind cave fish, or mexican tetras. their a cool looking fish with no eyes at all. even in moderatly decorated tanks, they are able to not bump into things or each other, and find their food rather easily.

i had several in a 10g tank, and they were awesome to watch. my son had even gone and netted one without me knowing and tossed it into my goldfish tank, where he seemed to happily live for close to a year before being wiped out by ich.

I was going to suggest the same thing, blind cave tetras. They are incredible to watch and go about their day even though they have no eyes. They are very hardy, and active feeders that will adapt to either floating or sinking food, although I love watching them look for floating pellets and still find them with ease. Had one die a few months ago at the age of about 3.

A tank that size would look great planted with some tetras.
