Hey guys, I'm trying to create a new setup for my 1.2m cichlid tank but the problem is I'm looking for a way that it doesn't get messed up. I'm thinking of a sandy bottom with some rocks but from past experience cichlids tend to move around the sand & push over the rocks leave the setup in such a messy state.

Would appreciate some tips & recommendations if any...

I know i've read of a lot of people tiling the bottom with bricks of some sort and then putting sand over it and even using apoxy to keep the rock fixture together so they don't knock them over and cause any damage. If you check youtube you could find plenty of videos demonstrating step by step on what to do to keep your tank safe!

As long as the rocks go in before the sand you will be absolutely fine.

you can silicone rocks together :) Do it at work all the time for large saltwater tanks where the client wants all the fancy live rock theres always a few rocks that I fear could fall from being knocked or just not secured enough so I will pull out the silicone.

If your chasing 1-2 rocks on the base maybe just silicone them to the glass then let it dry pour your sand around it.

You can also build pvc frames if you want to go up and drill the rocks cable tie them to the PVC.

If its for the hornets I would use a lot of silicone when those fish get big they pack a punch.

So this is a pic of my tank currently which is in real mess as I have recently moved to a new place. I want to start to add some design to it so would love to get some recommendations from u guys...

best thing i can say is seperate the fish...looks like you have a pair of jags? if so, you need to move them or the oscars to a different tank, but add some tall leafy plants in the middle of the tank to divide sight.

Much larger rocks placed on the glass with substrate filled in around them will help.

I have cichlids in a 180g that don't mess up the substrate too badly. They dig all the time, but there's a lot of decor so it prevents them from building mountains containing half the substrate in the entire tank.

Thnx guys for the responses...I got 2 oscars, 2 jags & 1 Texas. May think of moving out the oscars. Got a set of rocks that I'm thinking of placing in the tank so I'm hoping that wud help stop the digging problem. If i was planning to glue the rocks but didn't want to glue them directly to the bottom glass, is there a kind of a suitable layer I can add & glue them to it?
