Am starting to organise my upgrade and need help.

Right first stocking is a pair of marble motoro and a pair of Leo's. I don't intend on getting any other Rays or big fish. Just few Severums etc.

Due to space, max tank is 315 gal, 7x3x2. So I'm gona get two and stack them.

They will be on same systems and on a drip.

The bottom tank will also be 7x3x2 but 2ft will be divided off as an internal sump for the setup leaving a 5x3x2 space for the Rays. (This is as nowhere other than in garden to fit filtration as using all the space in room for the tanks!)

Will this be enough space for the Rays for a good few years? Idea being to keep them in the top 7ft but put males in smaller tank when female pregnant to keep them separated and when growing out.

Thanks

Leos as well as some marble motoros get very large, easily 2' across their disc and 3.5-4" long. I'd suggest smaller varieties of rays especially if you want to keep pairs (female included).

You would be fine for 2 years or so. It takes some time before they start putting on massive sizes.

U thought about running internal sumps in each tank instead of one giving each pair equal space say only loosing 8" in each tank like how aquaman runs his tanks ?

Yeah In honesty that's where the idea is from but looking to doing fluidised bed as already have k1 and love it and thought if link together then can keep on same system.

If I did that I'd end up with a 6.5x3x2 top and then 6ft wide underneath (as stand legs will take up half a ft.

I thought this way could maintain biggest tank possible on top and then come out with what would actually be a 5.5ft underneath?

If it wasn't so bloody cold in UK I'd just put big drum filter in garden and pipes through the wall lol!

How tall are the ceilings over there? Won't you need a ladder to get into the top tank?

I'd love to pull a triple stack over here but you loose access to a tier of tanks in order to have room to get into the other 2. I prefer my filters next to stacked tanks so I can still get into it for cleanings.

VERY curious how these internal sumps you guys speak of work do any of you have any pics of them?

I did look at doing a stack with a third tank above and using as a filter for the system.
However to do that id loose size of the tanks as the tank wouldn't be able to be flush with the side and back walls and there would need to be 2x4 steel legs to support the filter tank above.

This would also coat me approx an extra £1000 due to the increased costs of the stand, the tank and the plumbing. Which seems a lot to in essence only achieve an extra foot and a half in the bottom tank.

If you find aquamans page I'm sure on an old thread of his he has an explanation. But as Ashley said 8inxh wide sump which is sufficient to cope with adult rays. Quite impressive for us Brits who have smaller homes with no basements lol

My only issue running 2 tanks of one filter is I find u have a problem with one tank u have a problem with both

I've actually just ordered a tank from wharf and will be running a internal sump just like aquamans myb worth ordering tanks from them and letting them build the filters like Richards think he quoted only looksing 6" using a side sump ?

Very true, What size have you ordered?

Am just concerned about having too smaller tanks instead of one big one with abit smaller! lol
