I'm planning on making a plywood aquarium. The dimensions are 90"x32"x30." It comes out to about 350 gallons. How long would this tank hold the fish for before I'd have to go bigger? Also, what would be some suitable tank mates for the catfish?

keeping more than 1 rtc is prune to fighting. They grow extremely fast to 12" and tend to slow down abit. I would say around 2 years.

In my experience they grow extremely fast - outpaced everybody 3 to 1 except the taller & wider fish. They are relentless towards any fish they think will fit in their mouths. He out grew my tank within 2 years (it was a 180gallon 6 x 2 x2 )
The only fish that could hang was a very large Butterkuffi. I dont think they ever slow down in growth according to the size of the tank. At least from what I have seen.

Its was a real friendly fish that could be hand fed, picked up out of the water and pet. I find them as one of the most attractive catfishes out there. Its too bad in the end for most folks they will outgrow most large tanks, and it dosent take them long to do that...

360 is a great size tank - when i gave him away, he went into that size tank...it didnt take long before he looked cramped.....

What are you planning to go to down the road (size wise?)

Well I really just wanted to make sure I had enough time before I got a bigger tank or indoor pond. Right now I live in an apartment that I'll be staying in for the next 2 years. By that time I will find an apartment that could house such a beast. I'm thinking of making an indoor pond the next phase. The size I'm thinking of now is about as big as I can get. I might be able to extend it to 40" wide though.

40" wide should definatly hold him for a while Its gonna take him quite a few years to reach big enough where he cant turn around

Are you on the ground floor and on the slab? A 90 x 40 x 30 tank is 467gals, weighs over 4500lbs, and will exert 187lbs per square foot on the floor (provided it's on a flush-bottom stand). If it's going to be on cinderblocks, you'll also have the weight of a minimum of 36 blocks on the floor. That's definitely going to stress-test an apartment floor.

I am on the first floor but unfortunately I'm not on the slab. To make matters worse this an older apartment. I may have to wait for a different living situation before I can build my dream aquarium.
