tank size for 1 adult convict?

I know they probably don't count as monsters but I have an opportunity to get an adult for a decent price. In the future I want to set up a convict breeding tank but for now it would be just him, what size tank is suitable? And do convicts need tank mates?

I've kept young pairs in a 20 Long with no issues. But if it's one of those thick bodied adults then I'd say 35G or a 40 breeder since that's your intent anyway.
