Hi guys,

What is a minimum tank size for a female betta? I seen some females at petco and may want to get one. I know females can be added in groups in a 10 gallon. But I just want one. Thanks

I would have to agree with the one gallon tank. Even though they are found in mud puddles with about 1/2 to 2/3 of a gallon of water in a puddle, in some parts of Asia where they originate from, I would say anything up to a 5 gallon would be acceptable. A tank larger than a 5 gallon would be a waste of your resources for a single fish. So really it is up to you as to how big of a tank you provide. It probably would not be a bad idea to set up a nice small tank filtration for your female beta too. In their native habitats beta's have really poor water quality. So maintaining a good water quality of all parameters would be a blessing for the beta. I wish you much success with your female beta. ~David

They can actually survive in a mason jar but u can use one of those large pickle jar.

Thai:

I'm sure they can live in a mason jar, but I was trying to be kind and humane to the female beta. Fish have the right to have elaborate homes too. Not just people.
It just seems to me anything less than a one gallon glass pickle jar is just so . . . inhumane, and cruel and unusual punishment.
Being 6'-5" tall, I just couldn't picture myself being in a pickle jar. Sorry, Thai, but a beta in a jar. It's a non-visionary thing. I just can't see it happening.

Well I picked up a female crowntail. I placed her cup next to my males tank and he's going nuts. He's flaring at her and charging. I'm gonna move the cup though cause I know it's probably not healthy for him to keep doing that. Tomorrow I am going to move her to her own tank. I may get one of those 1.75 gallon critter keepers and keep her in that. Throw in a floating plant too. I won't have any filtration or heater.
