Tank size for festae pair?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had my pair - which had been bonded for some time - in a 6 foot, 125g.

One day the male killed the female, out of the blue.

I wouldn't go less than 6 foot tank, unless you have them divided...

x2 ... I like this answer ...

Id go with a 125, when they get big festae are vicious. The real reason festae's were given the name "red terrors", and also why GT's have that name, is because of how abusive the males can be to the females when breeding. You might want to keep a divider on hand even in a 6' tank. and festae do well with crenicichla, but theres a good chance that a breeding pair will kill anything else in that tank

120 XH - 4'x2'x2'

once they mature this will never work, will lose your female everytime(unless you have a strong divider)too small a foot print. Its ok when they are younger.

I had a similar experience with a pair I had housed in a 125 for two years "no divider" without incident. Came home one day to find that the female had shredded the male. At the time both were over 11-12". Keeping festae without a divider is like playing Russian roulette... These guys can turn on a dime... I'd play it safe even in a larger aquarium.
