hi guys and girls.

I'm getting ready to build a ply tank for my jaguar cichlid, i was thinking size wise 54 x 24 x 24. Is this going to be comfortable long term? I cant really go much longer that is the problem. So I guess i'm just curious as to what the keepers of these beasts house them in. Pictures would be great, mine is only 1" - 1"1/2 currently.

Thanks for any imput.

Ideal, i've wanted a jag for ages and finally seen one. I've got a pair of oscars too, would it be advisable to squeeze them in too or not?

Depends on the fish. My Oscars (about 11 inches) are a bit bigger than my Jag (about 10) so they are the boss when the tank (5x2x2) is bare but add plant and wood cover and the Jag takes over half of the tank and takes no funny business!

Not ideal but I thought things would work out differently for me but my circumstances took a turn for the worse and I can't get a second tank so I will have to rehome either the Jag or the Oscars soonish.

Oh really!? Is that them squaring up in your avatar? I guess that is the problem really you never know till you try. Oscars are currently a lot bigger so the jag has some serious growing to do.

Yes, that was taken months ago, they have all put on inches since then.

The tank size is not ideal for 3 fish of that size so i'll have to makes changes soon. If you manage to keep yours together you will probably have to look at upgrading one day. Give the Jag one end of the tank with plenty of cover to defend and the Oscars should leave him be once the novelty of testing out their new tank mate has worn off if my experience is anything to go by.

Also it's a good idea to make a divider incase things start getting out of hand.

What fish are you keeping with the Oscars? You might want to consider some dither fish.

CODzilla thats brilliant, thanks for the info. My pair of oscars are pretty chilled but they rule to roost, I rescued a convict and JD off of someones tank which burst. (I friggin hate convicts!!) But they're both quite small so I guess the O's ignore them for that reason. I'll see if I can get some pictures up.

Yeah at a later date I might be able to upgrade, failing that find room for another tank. Maybe I could convince the mrs to shut down her fancy goldfish tank(if only haha she'd get rid of me first!) - that's 5x2x2!!
I wouldn't want to get rid of them because I think it is a shame to get fish only to have to give them away.
Good Shout on the divider, might be worth having one for those just in case moments!

Goldfish in a 5x2x2?

Good luck with the build mate, do you have a design yet? There is plenty of inspiration on this site.

I'd like to do one myself one day but my skills are lacking!
