I have a RRS/s.maculatus and was wondering if a 36L×18w×18h would be good for life. Or if 37×18×22 would be good. Those are the two sizes I'm looking at. Thanks

Also what gph powerhead would you recommend. I have him with a 170gph powerhead in the 20 gallon he's in with a ac110 and another random 10 gallon filter. It really enjoys the current

Well, you're looking at a difference between a 50 gallon tank and 63 gallon tank. With a maximum size of around 8 inches, your mac should be okay for life in the 50 gallon. I understand why you are having trouble choosing though. You're only gaining gallons in height, aside from 1 inch. Ideally though, a 48" x 13"x 21" would be better.

Thanks yeah. Is the 48×13×21 a standard 55? The 50 breeder is $150 new with lids and black frame but the 63 is used frameless/lidless and a little worse for wear at $50. I'll search kijiji and Craig's list for tanks though the $400 29gallons are usually all I can find

Yeah, that's a standard 55. Just keep looking. I got a 55 on Craigslist, and at a good price too.

do you have the fish now? personally I rather go with a wider tank than a longer tank unless the fish is very active and will use the extra 12" length..but then I would go with a 75g over a 55g.
with the two size tanks you mentioned either one would work as there are not much difference in footprint, only in height. depends on the condition of the used tank I will probably go with that and save me $100 for something else.

I have it now. In a 20 but it's super active. Like he tries to bite me through the glass when it sees me come down the stairs. I like the idea of a wider tank. I'll get a pic of the 63 it looks kinda rough.

The fish sounds like very outgoing, does it use every inch of the length? if it does and if you have the space then a 75g would be nice since it's 48"x18". I always like wider tank, you can do more aquascaping vs a narrow tank. I don't think I'll ever get a 55g just for that reason.
as for the tank, it looks rough, seams looks uneven. maybe it's a DIY tank? or just a bad re-seal job..I wouldn't trust it by the look of it and like HamLuke said, keep shopping.
I like to give me p's some current, I have 2 koralia 8 in my cariba tank so that's 3250gph x2, in my other two 75gs I have Koralia 4 (1200gph) and would love to upgrade to something a bit more powerful. it also depends on what kind of powerhead you have. some have low current rating but all the current comes out a narrow nozzle like a jet, where as some have a wider output to provide a more gentle flow.

Unless my mac sees me, for the most part it sits in the dead zone under the powerhead where there's little flow. The PH (170 gph) is a narrow nozzle pointed at the front panel and the mac does quick laps around the tank to swim in the current but i think the flow isn't strong enough, since it just swims through it quickly and stops when it reaches the end of the tank. Theres an AC 110 pushing water back to front in the tank, and also a small 10 gallon filter pushing water front to back, lots of current, just in the wrong direction that i want. I think a Koralia 4 might be enough. I need to research more into powerheads.
