I am currently looking for a nice big tank for a Jag and maybe a few other monsters as tankmates. I am stuck on the 18 inches wide footprint of the the 75-150 gallon tanks. Is that wide enough for a large jaguar to turn around and be comfortable in? Like is a 120 or 135 big enough? Or should i go for like a 180 because its 24 inches wide? Ive never had a Jag before but I am really ready to get one so any input would be appreciated.

18" wide for a jag is fine. Larger tanks are always great but not always needed. I'm not sure were all the pair of jags need a 180g came from. Each fish is different and there is no set tank size that will always work.

Ive seen jags easily hit around a foot or more in less than 2 years of growth, but they tend to slow/stop around that point. 18" is plenty for them to turn around. I'd go with as big of a tank as possible, but the only way to know for sure is to put them in one and see how they do.

I think a 150 is great for a solo jag but if you are considering any other tank mates 180 is min. A pair may be ok in a 150 if they have a very strong bond( which most jag pairs do) but 24" width is what I would suggest and 8' long is much better too. I had a 14" male jag in a community once but he was quite mellow and only really showed aggression regarding his cave and if anything tried to challenge him. That was in a 6' bowfront that is around 175 gallons and 30" at it's widest.

a 180 isnt really that big considering its a 2 x 2 x 6 box, having it bigger than smaller also allows for tank mates, decor, building a perfect environment for the fish is more than a big box of water, your gonna need slate, wood, all these things occupy space thats where my advice to buy a 180 and be done with it would be, but i mean if there small you can grow them out in anything really, but i was under the assumption that these are adults were talking about and also that it wasnt gona be an empty box of water.....
take my advice or dont, makes no difference to me but you asked i told you , once the question is asked its open to the person reading to interpret what the asker is asking...

Thanks for the advice everryone. I think I would rather have a large tank just for him/her so I can really focus on it.
I think I would rather have just one jag but do they do better in pairs? Im open to having a pair but i am new to large cichlids(besides oscars lol) so idk how it would work??

I was looking at 150 show that has a 48x24 footprint and I liked the way it looked but I wasnt sure if i should stick with 6 feet or not.

Oh yeah as far as tank mates go...I have a 4-5 inch female crenicichla proteus pike cichlid. I dont think she gets very large, maybe like a foot at the most? she is in a 46 growing up but when i get my large tank i was wondering if she would be able to hold her own against the jag or should I get her own tank with tankmates she can hang with?
