Tank Size?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
your best bet for a gar will be a L. platyrhincus/oculatus (florida/spotted). they reach a max size of 18-24". but rarely get over 2 feet. the 150g will work for a while but it will be best if you upgrade to a 180g. for the best interest of the fish.

actually upgrading to a 180g from his 150 dimensions (as he has described them) really won't help. if there is going to be an upgrade (and one may be necessary down the line as these fishes are capable of growing larger than 2' i the home aquaria, it just rarely happens that way) then it should be to a tank that is wider than 24" (preferably 3' or more). going from a 24" wide tank to another 24" tank (even with greater length) really doesn't change much in the interests of the gar.

with gars, at least sub-adults and adults, wider is better 99% of the time--

60x30 would be preferable, but i think yr best bet would be to go for a 6'x3', if you can a 6'x4'. a 4x2x30" could house spotted/florida and tropical gars for quite a while. perhaps 2 yrs of so, thou im not so sure about the figures for tropical gars. this also depends on a large variety of factors;water temp, feeding, water parameters etc.

See now I'd have thought that upgrading from a 4' to a 6' tank would be worthwhile...though it makes sense now that I think of it, my gar seems to prefer taking wide turns (though he's not "stiff" by any means and can make sharp turns if he chooses).

gars are pretty flexible in contrast to popular belief

Yes they are. When mine wants to turn quickly he basically forms into a "C" shape and changes direction.
