im getting a couple Polypterus Palmas palmas and they are beautiful, i plan on picking up the Polypterus Palmas palmas next week and i find these guys so pretty and amazing, just a question in general what would the average tank size be for these big guys
i want to build a huge plywood tank but only the right size and what would be a good size for breeding. i plan on breeding many different species of polypterus and enderlichi

i need to know breeding tank size, and whats the best gallon size tank for them, im willing to turn my whole house into a tank just to see these guys happy and healthy

well if you want to make them happy don't worry about gallonage worry about foot print. If you wanted to keep a couple of palmas palmas a 75 gallon would be ok (48"Lx18"Wx21"). If you wanted to breed them then I would say a 120 would be a pretty good size to start. However you don't need a 120, but if you have the extra money and space it has a very good footprint for breeding (4'x2'x2'). While bigger would be better I wouldn't go too big if you wanted to breed polypterus because if you try to breed them in too large a tank there could do much distance between the two to be interested in each other. However I would breed Upper jaws in a 120 and lower jaws in a larger set-up maybe a 180 or something with a 24"-30" footprint.

+1, ive also heard a couple tips to get them breeding. Play the sounds of a thunderstorm next to their tank pretty loud and do a cool water change. it did the trick for my buddy w/ Ornates, he was using a 120 and it worked fine. I have one of the offspring lol
