So the past couple days I have had a tank smell that comes and goes. My tank is a 180g and the only occupants are 3 tinfoils barbs at 3in and a 4in GATF. The tank has been running for over a year. Parameters are fine, and I do 50% WC weekly.

I believe the smell is coming from the food. I bought Hikari Carnisticks to feed these guys and I could swear that when I drop the food in the tank, a little bit later the smell starts. Yesterday it was bad but when I woke up this morning is was pretty much gone. Does anyone else experience this?

I am not overfeeding btw. I literally drop 4-5 carnisticks into the tank, leave for 5 min and fish out what is not eaten. Is it possible this food is the cause of the stink?

If the only thing new is the hikari carnisticks, that would be my guess. Pretty sure those things have the nutritional value of Doritos. Fish LOVE them.

Been there done that and wait until summer when your room has higher temp....
That's reason for me to feed my predator mainly on market prawn deep in vitachem or stuff pellets into the prawn :) Never look back to those stick... LOL

Since tin foils are basically herbivores fish, you could try an algae based pellet on their area, while aiming fewer carnivore pellets for the GATF and see if that cuts down on the odor.

NL's makes my whole lounge stick of garlic for days, yuk.

i found this when i was using carni sticks. the fish loved them but it made the water stink.
