Okay, so I bought a 40g Breeder from Petco since they were having the $1/gallon sale, and I built a stand for it recently. I made the stand a little larger than it needed to be just to insure it wouldn't be too small. It's 40"x19". Anyhow, I was scanning Craigslist, and found a 75 gallon for giveaway. Is there anyway I can use the stand I made for it? It's super sturdy, the 4 legs are 4x4 posts, and it has center bracing, wrapped in tongue-and-groove pine. Just curious because I'm low on funds and a 75 gallon would suit my needs much better than a 40g. If not, I'll just live with a 40g.

glass tanks are only supported on the edges so you are leaving a lot unsuported. The would be stress at the point where the glass over hangs. Almost 40% of you perimiter would be unsuported.

Could make a cheap bare stand out of 2x4's and make it nice when you have more money. there are some great plans on tis site

Add a sheet of 1" ply to the top of the current stand and you'll be good to go.

Okay, so I bought the 75 gallon because I talked a different guy selling a 75 down to $20 for it (I missed the giveaway opportunity). I need to know if this will work. Basically I'll have 2 inches of Plywood on top if I just lay another, 6" longer sheet on top of the one I have now.

I've done it with smaller tanks, e.g., put a 38x16 board on top of a 20G stand (24" wide) to support a 30G tank (36" wide) . . . as long as you're confident your stand can support a 75G tank vs 40G tank, I think using the board to do it is not a problem

I'm certain it can. It's 4 notched 4x4 posts on all corners with 2x4 squares sitting on top them all the way around. It's solid as hell and way overbuilt. Here's a pic. I was just worried about the overhang.
