Some background info on my cichlid tanks:

30 Gal with two breeding Blue Acara 6" female and 2" Male.

30 Gal tank with two breeding Convicts with female under 2" and male just over 2" also with Fry.

75 Gal - home to a 7" Oscar, 7" Severum and 2x 5" blue botia Loaches and 4" Sailfin plec.

I have another 100+ gal with newer cichlids - 3"Jack dempsey, 3"Godmanni , 2" Firemouth, 4 x 6" Dollars, 4" Sailfin Plec and 4" Striped Raphel.

My two newest additions are 1.5" jag and 2.5" mota cichlid which are in the 75gal at the moment. I am going to be buying a new 180 or 200 gal tank within the next few month. I have been kindly told by a member not to keep the mota and the jag together so can anyone make suggestions on how to split the tanks.

This was what i was thinking.

30 gal - Convict tank - Grow out for convict feeders

30gal - Acara Tank - Grow out for Acara feeders

75 gal - Spare

100gal - Mota, Severum, convict, Firemouth, 2 loach and Sailfin plec

180or200 gal - Jag, Oscar, Jack Dempsey, Godmanni, Silver dollars, Sailfin Plec and Striped Raphel.

I think the jag and mota are female so hopefuly i will not get the same aggression problems. I know its probably going to be trial and error but any suggetions would be great.

I wouldn't leave the 75spare, i would throw the oscar and the silver dollars in the 75 and have an amazon tank... Also anything thats not overly aggressive will not survive with the jag or mota regardless of male or female. Only big aggressive cichlids like JD,GT,TEXAS,RD,etc. should be housed with JAG or Mota. I don't know how they advised you at the pet store but you bought 2 mean ass fish that will never tolerate each other and rarely tolerate others at full grown....So the peaceful big tank therory has ended as long as one of those fish are present.Good Luck.....

You could get lucky with the jag, mine is a foot long and very laid back. He fights with my oscar once in a while but nothing serious.

Why don't you just put the jag or mota in the 75 then make sure that the other one grows up with the other fish and knows his place. Personally I would diplay the mota as a single specimen in the 75 and take the chance with the jag since it is so small. Just my opinion.

i have a 6 inch mota i'm tellin you they are ass holes, i ahve had three jags and they tend to be more laid back, i would give the mota jis own tank like what was just suggested and take the chance with the jag with the dempsey and etc. Just make sure that the cichlids that with the jag get at least or over a foot long
