Could I have the lid on my display tank basically sealed air tight to the tank as long as the sump has the top open to allow for gas exchange? I kind of want the tank to be sealed to avoid humidity issues in the house. The sump is located in the garage where I don't really care so much about moisture.

You don't want to hermetically seal the main tank but covering it completely to reduce evaporation should be fine with decent gas exchange in the sump. If you are really worried about it throw an air stone in the sump under the bio media.
