hi, new to MFK but a long time reader. Im looking at building at tank from 10mm (3/8ish) glass that is 1200mm X 610mm high X 450mm wide (47" x 17.7" x 24") to keep a Oscar in. Is it a mistake to make a fish tank that's a bit taller then it is wider?

I don't see any problem, that is pretty close to a standard-sized 90G tank here in the U.S..

Wider lets you keep a larger range of fish but there is nothing wrong with going taller then it is wide. I use to have a 6x2x2.5 and it was a awesome tank and looked stunning too!

IMO its a "mistake" if you want to keep cichlids, although with the dimensions you're planning your oscar will be fine for life. A wider tank would give the fish more swimming room, more surface area for oxygen exchange, a more 3-dimensional look (fish can do more than just swim left to right), and if you're worried about the weight on the floor a wider tank will distribute it better than a tall narrow one. I love wide tanks and would never own anything taller than it is wide as I simply don't like the look of them. Personal preference though...
