I'm having a major heat issue in my tank. It was 85.1 this at 5:00 am, the room temp 79 now, during the day is 90 or lower, his heater is off, I've now removed the marble at the bottom because it was holding heat. It has been over 100 degrees f outside, I have 1 small air conditioner as close to the living room as possible. I try my best to maintain room temp. The tank just keeps getting hotter. I have a fingerling aro and I know we're getting close to dangerous, he won't eat this am.

I can water change down a couple of degrees but it creeps back up. Is this better or more stressful on the aro? I tested my filter in/out vents. The biowheel kicks off about 1 degree higher than tank. I turned that off.

My tank is 55 gallons. stumped. frustrated.worried.:(

Buy a fan, open the lid.
If you house jumpers, use some egg crate and secure it to the tank.

Without a fan my tank hits 85F, with the fan it easily gets down to 80.

You could float a 2 liter full of frozen water, but that dosn't work long term. They don't seem to freeze fast enough.

Avoid temp swings if you can, those will do more harm than a slightly elevated temp, but that's very warm. Get as much surface agitation as you can. The warmer the tank is, the less oxygen.

okay guys, i've been doing that, blowing the AC air over the tank, I do house jumpers, a fingerling aro, but can use a safety net instead of the lid but the allergens and dust and cat hair fly around too....???? Please keep helping me think though......I really appreciate the posts.

You may want to consider getting several plastic water bottles, filling them up with water, freezing them, and floating the water bottles in the tank during hot days. If you have several of them, you can rotate the melted ones into the freezer and the frozen ones into the tank.

ice cubes and a fan....o and make sure you got lots of oxegyn since high temp means less oxegyn so if you got another pump layin around put it in the tank

I've actually done the iced bottled water once, good ideas. I didn't consider making it a ritual but will now. How fast can I safely drop temp with a fingerling silver aro today? What (sorry rottbo-i forgot) is a healthy temp range for the baby aro? my tank ranges from 73-85 f. I usually drop it two degrees, then after an hour 1 degree per hour, but that makes for a lot of work!

Are you checking the temp in the actual tank itself or the filter like before? You might be building heat from the motor in the filter.

Without an external source of heat...it is impossible to be warmer than ambient room temp.

So take a room temp with that thermometer, then check your water in the tank...if it is higher, then heat is comming from the canister filter or the penquin350...assuming your lights are off as well.

you might want to check the lines into and out of your cannister see if you are gaining any heat there...

outdoor temp is one thing but indoor temp wouldn't be the same...:grinno:

I don't think that you have to much to worry about. 84-85 is excellenct temp for aro's, and 90 is high but I would worry until about 92-94. I would however try to avoid rapid water temp changes when using ice, 73-85 is a significant temp change. I suggest setting your heater at 80-82 and installing a small fan on the top of the tank to control the highs, and decrease light time by an hour or two.
Good Luck
