I have chance to get a couple of large tanks (125G) but I am little gun shy to get them. You see I had a 300G tank I bought from a pet about a year ago and it bust on me. I am sure someone knows the rest of the story water all over the place, and a lot of costly repairs. I was just wondering if someone could give me some advice on testing the tanks or something that cold lower the chance of this happening to me again.

Look the tank over very carefully and test it FULL of water at the sellers house. If he is willing to risk the possible damage to show you the tank is good, then it probably is.
Still look it over and use common sense. ANY defect is a possible catastrophe, including design...

What are the tanks made of Glass or Acrylic?
