Hi all I have a 100gal tank thats well established with oscars and chilids and I just got a new tank from my uncle with is 200 gal. I was planning to do a quick change from drainning the tank taking out the fish and then moving the old tank and placeing the new tank in its place and using the old filtration with new water. Would their be any down fall with my fish doing this if so, what is the best way of doing this?

Your plan sounds fine.

If the 'old' water from the 100G tank is low in Nitrates, I would consider using it in the new 200G tank rather than using all new water. You would just need a couple new or clean totes or trash cans to temporarily hold the old water before pumping it into the new tank.

You don't need to use the 'old' water, you'll just need less 'new' water.

There is a great article from another forum on swapping tanks Here

+1 and whether u use some of the the old water or not, ur plan sounds good and I don't see any problems that might affect ur fish, just keep the filtration wet in the process so u won't have a bacteria die off in ur bio filtration

As far as the chemical balance its a tad bit High in nitrates and in others as well, do you guys think this will effect the fish since its getting moved into new water?

If nitrates are high just use less old water and more New water

What I would do is:
-Empty the old tank.
-Put fish in a bucket with old water (obviously)
-Put at least 50g or more of the old water in the new tank.
-Put all the necessary items in the tank (filters, heaters and such).
-Put fish in new tank with old water.
-Fill up with new water and just treat it like a water change.

THIS!! Adjust amount of "old"water according to nitrates

I would use all 100 gals to transfer to thd new tank and fill the rest with new water just in case of ammonia spikes
