I am (hopefully) getting a 90gal off CL tomorrow, includes stand, lights, pre-drilled tank and overflow, sump, and rena filstar. I am unaware of the sump size or canister size, but those two I consider a bonus in the purchase. As of now I have a hugely-stocked 45 gal up and running for just under a year with 2 mature AC110 and a UGF.

Now, I need advice on cycling the 90 when it arrives. My approach was to set up the 90 with the new filters, add water, condition it, bring it to temp and let the water circulate. Then I would throw on the ac110 and move my gravel over.
If the AC110 are pushing at least 700 gph together I feel like I should be able to add my fish before too long. What do you guys think?

Btw I wont be using the UGF in the 90 as it was originally for my 29 and I may put some sand in the 90

I think if you transfer about 20-25 gallons of your old tank water and move the ac110's you should be fine.

I've read on this site that the water column doesn't hold much of the BB. I just want to know how long I should wait before the fish go in

If you use some of the media from one of your cycled tanks you should help to cycle the tank a little faster. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure if your tank is cycled is to test the water with a kit...not the strips.

Tank is filled and the sump is up and running. There was a small leak I had to take care of yesterday and letting the silicone dry took a while. The Rena Filstar pulls air somewhere in the intake so I will try replacing the hose to see if that helps. As of now I am bringing the water up to temp (85). Luckily the purchase included two test kits with the liquid drops so I'm good to go on that. The only thing that sucks is I can only fit one AC110 on the back becuase of the built in overflow. Once the water's warm I'm going to toss in the gravel from my 45 and my AC110 that is filled with ceramic rings, all matured.

What the heck is with you guys and old tank water.
Your talking about stuff we drain out during routine water changes because of the toxins that build up.
But still post after post recommending the transfer of old tank water.

Move as much media and sand/gravel from an established tank and add fresh water.
Wait until you get close to your desired temp. and add your fish.
Monitor tank and WC as needed.

Just use seachem stability they say you can put fish in right away as long as you treat for 7 days after

That's what I used with my 1000 gal and never had any problems or fish losses but it was expencive for a 1000 gal but worth it in my eyes

You should invest in an API freshwater test kit too so you can test for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate to make sure everything is going smoothly.

safe water be green, cut the time and effort to dump that old water, its bigger tank so its count as "water change".
do i need to tell more reason to use that old dirty water? :grinno:
