I purchased a young wild caught Oscar about a month ago and have been growing him in my community tank. He is now at the size where he is ready to move into the 125 I have for him but every time I move him he just sinks to the bottom and his scales start turning white and falling off. So I put him back in the community tank and he's fine.

I do not understand what's wrong. I have south american cichlids and bichirs in the 125 and they have never showed any problems and are growing and eating great. I clean both tanks weekly doing a 33-45% water change. Both tanks are controlled by a JBJ thermostat and are identical temps, lighting is dimmer in the 125. None of the other fish pick on him ever. I really need to move him but I do not understand what is going on.

he is an oscar? they are drama queens, long as no health issues he will be fine, they love to pout, laying on there side and just looking at you. move him and leave him, he will probably pout for a few days then be back to a in your face fish.

Are his scales really turning white and falling off? Or is he just shedding his slime coat from being caught and plopped into another tank?

+1 that's what mine did when I moved it. It pouted for about a week. It would get up and swim around if I wasn't in the room but as soon as it saw me, back to the bottom or into its cave till after I left. It wouldn't eat in front of me for about 2 weeks even feeders or blood worms. Left the room for a few minutes and all the food disappeared. Drama Queens indeed.

I am going to say loosing his slime coat and his scales just turn white. His fins also becomes separated and tattered. I believe they are drama queens but he sure looks bad when I move him :(

Some Oscars will start to shed slime when under stress. Keep the lights off, and the tank covered for 1 week.
