Tank size: from 120g-280g. Stock will be transported (30 min drive) from the growout tank at work to home. Bio media from canister will be moved to overhead trays, four bio wheels will be placed on top of new bio media in the remaining trays to seed. Totally new water and sand substrate in the new tank. I'm not planning to bring the old water it's too much of a hassle. I will be running the filter with just the mechanical media for 2 days before the move. Old tank has been running for eight months now. Will it be ok? Do you see any potential problems that might harm the fishes? I just need assurance that I am doing it right. Thanks a lot.

Bump for advice.

Uhh i would say no this is not good, your taking the fish from a well established tank putting new sterile water environment, the seeding is good but you need to ether add your fish slowly or move as much water as you possibly can over as well as the old filter if possible..

Ok thanks, will follow your advice. Just have to borrow containers from the lfs. Let's say I was able to transfer 100g of old water, can I add the additional 180g right away to fill up the tank? More like a 75% WC. Or should I do it like 90g the day of the move and another 90g the next day? Thanks again.

I don't see the need for a water transfer but moving filter media is definitely a good idea. Any plants or rocks etc. that can be taken from the old tank and moved to the new one will help as well. Also I would only add one fish at a time spacing it out by a few days just to make sure all your parameters stay on point.

Would you be willing to add a few feeders a few days before any show piece fish moves? Adding the feeders in the new tank for a week after the media and deco transfer may help as well.

Just my opinion of course but i did just complete 2 moves myself (not as large as yours though).

I have guppies that I can put there with the new water and maybe like transfer 25% of the bio media from the old tank for a start. I also have a fully established 15g, 55g and 90g at home if that helps. If I can get away with totally new water in the new tank that would make the move a lot easier. Thanks for the replies and hopefully more members will chime in.:)

I would try to add some seachem stability to your new water to cuz it helped me cycle my tank that much faster...

I agree about the Seachem....I did the exact same thing your doing but i added the Seachem....only had to cycle for 2 days and my Africans were fine....

transfering water from your old tank to your new tank wont do anything...
what you wanna do is transfer the substrade, filter media & the sorts to
the new tank to help speed up the cycle...remember when you transfer
these items you need have them in water so the bb dont die or it would
just be a waste of time... in addition to transferring old media and etc.
you could use seachem stability to help further increase the cycling period...
remember to follow the labeled directions and dont overdose on water
conditioners... just like us fish can od and die...lol

btw if you dont want the old substrate and etc from the old tank just use to
help cycle the new tank and remove after its stabled and well cycled...

Thanks guys. Had to order Stability online and will proceed with the move once it arrives. Better safe than sorry.
