Ok, so i have a 55 gallon that is packed to the gills full of fish, and I am thinking of upgrading. My dilemma is that the next biggest tank that will fit onto my stand is a 75 gallon. Do you all think it is worth upgrading to a 7, or should i jump for a 90 gallon that will take some modification of my stand.

I am a carpenter so i can probably make it swing, but it will probably end up doubleing the cost for the 90 upgrade vs the 75. Just planning for when i get that job good ol' obama keeps talking about creating or saving :shakehead

Second question, I would really like a stingray, do I need to splurge on a sand substrate? I have heard gravel is rough on them... and any other things i need to know about them?

Well if you plan on keeping a stingray your going to need a tank with a bigger footprint. The more bottom area the better and you can also go bare bottom so you wouldn't need sand or gravel.

A 90 is the same footprint as a 75, just taller. Both are probly too small for a ray.

Why not just build a new stand?

BIGGER the better

really all depends on your stock list.. Of all the research i've done on rays wanting one myself.. the minimum seems to be 220wide to support one of the smaller species. imo if you plan on upgradeing skip the 75 and invest in a 125. craigslist or local paper should be able to find one at a decent rate and either keep your 55 or off-set the cost of the 125 by selling it.

yup. a 90g or a 110 tall with both fit on your stand.

the 110 tall is 48x18x30.

so you could concievably double the volume of your tank on the same stand, assuming it is structrually sound to handle twice the weight.

however, none of these tanks have enough footprint for a ray..

The 90 i am looking at is 24" wide, 48 long and 18 tall i think

My stock atm is:
8" shovel nose cat
5" red bellied Boryeli
3" red tail shark
6" needle nose
7" Pleco
8" ghost knife fish
6" Blue cray
3" Oscar

Pretty sure I'm pushing the tank as is but I have 100 gallons worth of biowheel filters, no chem problems and happy fish

As for the building a new stand idea, I will do that when I sell my house and move, I don't want to be moving a 125, the next place I am getting (I hope) will have a room I can set up my 55, whatever i get next, and then a 125+ tank all together.

So would a a 48"x24" foot print be to small for a ray?
