Has this happen to anyone before? Last Friday, I changed the water in my tank and cleaned my AC110 and my 305(also have 405 but didn’t clean it). I rinsed the media in old tank water and decide to remove the ceramic media from the AC110 and replace it with carbon because I had some medicine in the tank. I woke in the morning and my tank is damn near pitch black. I rinsed the carbon pretty good before I placed it in the filter. What can I do to remove it, or I just have to change the water everyday to remove it? I can barely see the back of the tank. All the fish seem fine, its just pitch black.

wth? do you have pictures? id say wc and maybe boost up the mech filtration.

i would think it would be the carbon but you said you rinsed it

The only thing I did this time when I cleaned the AC110, I rinsed foam in tap water and cleaned everything the same as I always did. This is the first time I rinsed anything in tap water, I always use old tank water, but this time the foam was looking more dirty then usual. When I woke and noticed the water being black; I removed the carbon and changed out 5 buckets of water, the water was grayish. I changed out 6 buckets last night and the water look more brownish. Maybe the bacteria all died? This sucks because I usually sit in front of the tank for 30min-1 hour just relaxing and now this crap happens. There is no smell to the water.

my bet is carbon... that fine fine dust can be a pita to get out. pack in some extra floss or finer floss, or try running a sponge on your intake tubes for a few days. should catch the bits up. then just syphon the sponge. press into it.. and you'll see the water run black. or rinse the floss daily until it's cleared up. I've also used products like "crystal clear" ect..and had some success with them in the past.. but prefer personally not to use Chems in my tank unless I "have" too.

^ i wouldnt reccomend commercial water clarifier's... they usually make the situation worse.

It's carbon dust. As it settles in the water you will see it covering your substrate and deco. The water will clear in a day or two. I wouldn't use clarifiers. Sometimes they make things worse. Let it clear on its own. Just make sure that the water is oxygenated. I think you'll be fine.

Take out the carbon and rise it thoroughly and do a water change.
^^^I agree. It sounds to me like you either didn't rinse out the carbon thoroughly enough or the carbon is leaking out of the bag that you have it in.
