I'm trying to help out my mother with her tank. For some reason the water will just not clear up. I've done one water change, and it cleared up within a few hours, but it only lasted two days. We have now done two water changes that were about 40% of the tank water this week, and nothing.(One Monday night, one yesterday morning) I'm stumped, I have no clue what is wrong. It seems that there are small particles floating in the water that are being pushed around by the filter, causing it to look fogged. I also noticed that when the bubble wand is off, within 30 min. there is a coat of what looks like a mucus layer at the top of the tank. You never notice it when the bubble wand is on. The fish seem to be having trouble breathing, and have been for the past two weeks. I added 1 tsp of Accu-Clear to the tank to see if that helps at all, and it has new filter pads. And it is a 55-Gallon, so hopefully it works, but I would like to know what others think of this, and what could be the issue. Any ideas are appreciated. :)

Hmmm, just trying to trouble shoot here. What about the amount of filtration. Must be fine if this tank hasnt had problems before, assuming you havent added more fish or just started this aquarium???

i would do several more 50percent water changes, a friend of mine had a similar problem in his piranha tank, too much debris in the tanks, vacuum the gravel as well during the water changes

That makes me so nervous i prefer 30-40 %. I lost fish once from a 50% change

Have you tested your water? Since you put brand new filter media in it, I'm guessing your tank isn't cycled.

How long has the tank been set up? Nitrate level? Stocking level? Temp? All fish accounted for?

i 75 percent water change twice a week, the thing is to never let your pH change too much from the water you are adding to the tank, as long as you don't drastically change the chemistry of the water too quickly you will be fine, i haven't lost a fish in over a year, and never do to a water change
