Just wondering if that's OK, or if the tank needs the full support. I'm not talking a huge difference, but something like a 18" wide tank on a 13-14" wide stand (wide=front to back). I want to put a tank on the lower shelf of the 55G stand I've got, and I'd rather use a wider tank like a 40BR, rather than a standard 30G.

might be ok for a bit, but you're asking for trouble because of the added stress.

I have many tanks situated that way for more than 3 years. But Rally is right, it might cause trouble. For peace of mind you may place a piece of plywood that's big enough to support the whole bottom of the tank and even paint it to make it look a bit better.

If you KNOW the stand can support the weight, you can put it on a piece of thick plywood (3/4") that's cut to size. I wouldn't just let it hang over the ends with nothing underneath.

lots of people have tanks turned sideways on the stands so they can fit more tanks for breeding/growout.I have 8 20g tanks turned so the 24" length is supported by an 18" wide stand.
I agree the plywood is a good idea though

my friends tank overhands like 5" on both sides. and over 3" on the front and back. its a 160gal tank and its been standing for over 2 years now.

I agree with Crazy Taco. I never thought I would agree with a Taco, but oh well.
